Bringing Industry Excellence to Education: A Spotlight on Marine

The Bournemouth and Poole College takes pride in its team of teaching staff, many of those have a wealth of industry experience in the industries students aim to work in in the future. Offering continual professional development benefits both the staff and the students, allowing our teaching staff to follow best practice and offer the best possible education and training to our students.

Owen Davies, a lecturer in the Engineering, Marine and Motor School, recently completed his Diploma in Education and Training (DET) Apprenticeship alongside working at The College.

Achieving a Distinction in the course is a huge achievement, and in Owen’s own words, he said, “The DET Apprenticeship was a great opportunity for me to build up the skills to be able to share my industry experience in the best way possible.”

For Owen, being able to share his skills and knowledge is a real highlight of working at The College. He is excited about the future, and said, “being able to give back to future students is exciting. It’s great being able to train others using both my industry experience and the skills I’ve gained throughout my apprenticeship.”

The Marine Technology Centre is packed full of industry-standard equipment to ensure students have access to everything required to show the skills an employer would expect to see. Owen was pleased to talk about the high standard of equipment available and said, “between the support of the team at The College and the excellent machinery and facilities we have available, our students are sure to leave with highly employable skills and experience.”

It’s this combination of industry experience and friendly, adaptable teaching skills that sets the team at The Bournemouth and Poole College apart from others.
