Course Overview

The Level 1 Diploma in Music, Performing and Production Arts has been designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to access and progress to further study and training in a range of music performance and production disciplines. 

The qualification will provide students with:

• An introduction to the skills and knowledge of music, performance and production

• An introduction to research for music, performance and production

• An opportunity to explore and enhance their creative development

• A broad diagnostic introduction to music, performance and production

• A standard from which all other learning will develop

The qualification will provide students with:

• An introduction to the equipment and processes used in music, performing and production arts, and the skills necessary to record and express ideas

• An understanding of how contextual research is used to support creative activities

• An introduction to the communication skills used in support of creative activities and develop an understanding of the role that communication skills play in informing and developing ideas

• An opportunity to use acquired skills, knowledge and understanding to explore and resolve creative problems

• An opportunity to develop personal strengths in music, performing and production arts and to use the knowledge, understanding and skills developed in previous units



 

The UAL Level 1 Diploma in Music, Performing and Production Arts is designed to provide an opportunity for those who may have an interest in music, performing and production arts to explore some of the materials, methods and processes that support many music, performing and production arts activities, and to begin to develop some related skills. It is intended that this initial experience of music, performing and production arts teaching, learning and assessment activity will provide students with a test of their commitment and interest in the subject and their ability to sustain a focused exploration of the skills, knowledge and understanding for progression within music, performing and production arts education.

You will need to achieve 3 GCSEs grades 3-1 (formerly D-G) including English and maths grades . Alternatively successful completion of a Foundation Entry Level 3 qualification and have achieved an Entry Level 3 Functional Skill in English and maths.  Each applicant will be assessed on their individual merits, and a keen interest in Music, Performing and Production Arts is essential.

All units are assessed through internal assessment. Internal assessment allows learners to apply technical knowledge and demonstrate mastery of practical and technical skills through realistic tasks and activities. This style of assessment promotes deep learning through ensuring the connection between knowledge and practice. Assesments will include performances, recordings, presentations, reports, blogs, websites.

All students will particpate in a minimum of 30 hours of course related work placement, virtual work experience and work related learning.

The UAL Level 1 Award and Diploma in Music, Performing and Production Arts is delivered over one year and will enable students to develop a portfolio of work that could support progression into a range of qualifications at Level 2. The majority of the students completing the UAL Level 1 Diploma in Music, Performing and Production Arts will progress to further study via ‘Applied General’ Level 2 qualifications or onto apprenticeships in related industries such as production. Some students may progress directly into entry level roles in the creative industries.

The College has a wide range of facilities on offer at the North Road Music Centre:

Live Performance Room, 7 fully equipped Rehearsal Rooms, 5 Recording Studios (Pro Tools/Cubase and ancillary equipment, including TL Audio M4, Audient Zen, Soundcraft Ghost, M-Audio), Lecture Room, Lecture Theatre, Technology Suite (iMacs - Pro Tools/Cubase) and 6 Practice /Editing Rooms.
