Course Overview

This course will allow beginners or more experienced painters to explore watercolour, acrylic and oil painting through the lens of traditional and contemporary practices and styles. You will get to know a little about the history of painting whilst using and exploring the materials that artists such as Turner and Renoir were using. The programme will develop your observing eye and drawing skills as well as a sense of freedom and confidence. You will get a chance to explore contemporary painting techniques and work from a number of references including local nature.

You will learn:

  • To use a wide range of traditional and contemporary painting and drawing techniques. 
  • To try a variety of styles and aesthetics within painting. 
  • To have more confidence when painting and sketching from life.  
  • To prepare surfaces and materials in traditional ways.  
  • To have an appreciation of diverse types of painting throughout history. 

 The course can be for students who have little or no previous experience. Or you may have some artistic skills and wish to explore the medium of painting further.

Course Materials: All additional course materials will be provided by the course provider. You will use and learn with tools and materials.

What you need to bring:  

  • Apron or ’messy’ clothes
  • Sensible shoes and weather appropriate clothing for when going to Poole Park

No experience required, but a willingness to create and experiment is essential. 

You will develop a small body of work that showcases different forms of painting and drawing.

The course costs £285 for the 10 week duration. 

 Course Aims

  • Provide a new perspective on painting and making. 
  • Introduce a range of painting materials and processes. 
  • Build your confidence in working with paint and drawing. 
  • Take advantage of local locations in order to create work from life. 
  • Introduce a variety of painters and styles from the past and present.  
  • Encourage freedom backed up by knowledge. 
  • Create a relaxing, supportive environment for creative expression.
