Course Overview

The Level 2 programme focuses on work related skills, with projects and assignments that develop  practical skills and theoretical knowledge. This one year, full time programme makes full use of the College facilities and outdoor activity sites in the local area with the programme covering a mixture of both Sport and Outdoor Adventure subjects. Specialist facilities and equipment are provided for the activities that form the basis of the course.

The programme will combine relevant theory and practical activities and where appropriate will be as practically based as possible. The sport  and outdoor adventure/education sector is very demanding and requires those working within the sector to have a high degree of motivation, excellent communication skills in formal and informal settings and a desire to continue to improve and keep learning.

Students will be required to undertake a range of physical activity in order to meet course requirements. While completing this qualification, learners may develop the knowledge, understanding and essential skills employers look for in employees. These range from familiar ‘key skills’ such as team working, independent learning and problem solving, to more tricky-to-measure skills such as:

• an appreciation for appropriate behaviour and dress

 • appropriate interpersonal skills

 • communicating with professional colleagues/peers and/or senior leaders

• supporting other aspiring employees

 • personal manners

 • understanding work practices and how different roles and departments function within an organisation.

Students that have a passion for physical activity being in the outdoors

This qualifications aim to:

 • give learners the introductory skills and knowledge to start a career in sport of progress with employment in the sector

 • prepare learners for higher or further education, through full-time or part-time study. The objectives of these qualifications are to help learners to:

• choose a pathway and units that reflect their career or academic aspirations

• enter employment in the sport and active leisure sector or to progress to higher or further education or onto the Level 3 Sport qualifications

• gain and develop essential skills that are valued by employers and higher and further education institutions

 • develop knowledge and understanding of the vocational sector

You will require a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades 9-3 (formerly A*- D) including English and Maths and Science for some programmes. Alternatively successful completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification and have achieved a Level 1 Functional Skill in English and Maths.

This qualifications consist of 4 graded mandatory units:

• Participating in sport

• Outdoor and adventurous activities

• Leading an outdoor activity session

·       Plan, deliver and evaluate an activity session

You will have the opportunity to engage in work experience placements within the public services or local employers.

On successful completion of this Level 2 First Diploma you can progress at the college to the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Public Services or other related Level 3 course. Alternatively, progression to employment or apprenticeship training.

Work experience enhances your studies and is an important part of your course. It ensures you leave college ready for the world of work. It is compulsory to undertake an element of work experience when studying a Level 1, 2, or 3 course.
