Course Overview

For adult students who wish to go to university to get a professional degree, (e.g. nursing, business, computing) but are not yet ready for the Access course.  This may be because you have been out of education for a long time or because your recent training has been vocational rather than academic, or because you need to get your maths and English qualifications for Access.

Maths and English lessons are offered automatically when you enrol for Pre Access.  These will be on a separate day.

Don't worry if you feel nervous as tutors give detailed guidance throughout the course, and assignment briefs also give explicit information about how to meet assessment criteria.  Students are actively encouraged to ask questions.  By the end of the course you will be able to demonstrate skills and knowledge in the following areas:

Critical Thinking Skills

Developing Personal Study Skills

Equality and Diversity

Personal Confidence and Self-awareness

Presentation Skills

Applicants must be aged 18 before the start of the course.

For those with English as a second or other language IELTS 5.5 is required.

We would strongly advise applicants who require IELTS to achieve level 7 (Academic) as required by universities at the time of applying.

We will support you in identifying how you can improve these skills, if necessary.

You will need to attend an Interview to ensure you are able to undertake the appropriate hours and work load for this intense course.

This is an intensive course and there will be course work to complete outside of the classroom every week.  Please ensure you have arrangements in place to allow you to do an average of 2 - 4 hours a week - this may be at home or at one of the college sites as you can use college facilities on any day.

You will be asked to complete maths & English assessments at interview.  If you screen at Level 1 or Level 2 for maths and/or English, you will be able to study maths and English alongside Pre-Access. If you screen and Entry Level 3, you will be required to study English and maths with alternative provider, as Entry Level is not delivered at the College.

If you are working at Entry 3 Level in English and maths you may not be able to progress to the Access course for 2 years while you enhance your grade to Level 1, and then to Level 2.

Progression from this course is to an Access to Higher Education course, often Health Professions, Humanities or Computing. Future progression is often to university, usually a local university such as Bournemouth or Southampton.
