Course Overview

This course is intended to give a good introduction to a career in any of the uniformed services such as the armed forces, the ambulance service, the fire service, the police, the prison service and Customs and Excise. The Public Services have their own selection procedures and successful completion of the course prepares students for entry as well as progressing to the L3 Public Services qualification. Students develop vital skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, discipline and respect and should be prepared to develop as individuals.

You will be required to work on academic assignments, fitness, teamwork and leadership together with a genuine interest in participating in sport and outdoor pursuits.
 

You will study units covering a range of topics including public service employment, public service skills, improving health and fitness for entry to public service, adventurous activities and teamwork for public service, land navigation by map and compass and driving and its relationship to public service.

Additionally you will study Functional Skills or GCSE English and Mathematics as part of the study programme if you do not have a grade 4 at GCSE. 

For students with an interest in a Public Services career.

You will require a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades 9-3 (formerly A*- D) including English and maths and science for some programmes. Alternatively successful completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification and have achieved a Level 1 Functional Skill in English and maths.

 The course is assessed by a mixture of written assignment, project work and practical assessment.

You will have the opportunity to engage in work experience placements within the public services or local employers.

On successful completion of this Level 2 First Diploma you can progress at The College to the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Public Services or other related Level 3 course. Alternatively, progression to employment or apprenticeship training.

The public services require hard work, leadership and initiative. The Level 2 Diploma course will draw out and develop these qualities. Throughout the course your personal tutor will monitor your progress and provide support and guidance on a wide range of issues.  Students will also have the opportunity to undertake volunteering activities, attend insight courses and enjoy contact with public services through visits and guest speakers.
