Course Overview

The Level 4 Apprenticeship in Manufacturing Technician offers an innovative way of futureproofing businesses. Apprentices work as part of manufacturing teams and gain in-depth knowledge and skills in production and manufacturing engineering. Apprentices are critical thinkers and independent learners, able to solve complex design and engineering-related problems individually and in teams. Validated by Bournemouth University, the Programme has high industrial relevance and close ties with the requirements of local industry. Students will work on ‘live’ projects and assignments related to and based on real experiences within their organisation. Accreditation will be sought from the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) to meet, in part, the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) in 2025

This course is the lead in to our degree level apprenticehsip programmes, apprentices will pass through four major stages. The first two years will be spent studying for a Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) qualification, and then progress to our Level 5 Foundation Degree (FdEng) in the third year. To complete the full Degree (BEng), the apprentice will complete two further years of study. Upon completion, not only will they have a range of skills tailored to business needs, but they will also have six years of vital industry experience. The final year also involves preparation for the end point assessment.

These courses have been specifically designed, in consultation with Industry and Professional Institutions, to enable those predominately working in engineering to study alongside their work. Our HNCs and Foundation Degrees in engineering are ideally suited to those who are looking to gain the essential skills to advance their career in a variety of engineering roles.

To begin at Level 4/HNC, candidates will typically have 32 UCAS points, one A Level at grade C in a relevant subject or equivalent AVCE or national diploma/certificate.

To enrol as an apprentice you must be in employment and your employer agree to the process of signing up to and completing the necessary tasks within the Apprenticeship Service. We will be able to support your employer through this process as required.

Before the end of the Apprenticeship, two end-point assessment methods will assess the apprentice’s overall knowledge, skills and behaviours:

1. A Case Studies Presentation – allows apprentices to showcase work-based projects they have completed. Demonstrates practical application of the knowledge, skills and behaviours detailed in the standard. This is followed by a question and answer session led by their designated endpoint assessor.

2. Occupational Professional Discussion – enables the end-point assessor to evaluate the apprentice’s occupational competence. A formal discussion between the apprentice and the end-point assessor, it draws upon an occupational competence report produced by the apprentice and supporting evidence of how the apprentice has performed during the Apprenticeship.

As the course is an apprenticeship, you will be working at least 4 days a week in a relevant industry job role.

Completing this Level 4 HNC apprenticeship will give you the knowledge and experience to progress to a degree in a relevant subject.

There is a national shortage of skilled engineering professionals. During the degree apprenticeship, you will become competent in a range of skills, opening up a wide range of career opportunities in the future.
