Course Overview

This course could be your first step to television, film or theatre work, be it either in performance or technical support. Employment within the industry not only depends on talent, but also a sense of determination to succeed. As competition for acting jobs can be extremely fierce you might consider working voluntarily for a local theatre, for example, in order to gain some valuable experience and make important contacts.

This course offers a comprehensive introduction and exploration of performance and theatre in the form of practical workshops and skills development. You will regularly have the opportunity to work on productions such as plays, student devised work or showcases. In addition, you will learn about the production process and see and analyse theatre work in the Jellicoe Theatre.

You will study 18 units over two years including:
• Classical and contemporary performance
• Devising and Improvisation
•Dance and Movement
• Principals of acting
• Singing
• Historical context of performing arts
• Theatre for Children

During the course you will develop your ability to respond to drama performances to improve your understanding of social and cultural contexts of theatre arts, as well as developing your performing skills.

You will require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 9-4 (formerly A*-C) including English and maths grades.

You will receive regular tutorials, which will enable you to discuss your progress with your personal tutor. Your study units will be assessed by both external verifiers and by your personal tutors. You will be continually assessed during your course through a series of practical performance and work related assignments. You will be supported creatively and professionally in many aspects of the industry and will be given the tools and encouragement to take responsibility for your own learning and achievement, taking into account industry standards for behaviour and performance.

After the 2 year course, progression may be to university to study for a degree, our own Foundation Degree in Contemporary or Music Theatre, specialist training at Drama school or to employment. The skills learnt on this course will help you in a variety of careers within television, film or theatre work, stage, cabaret, leisure (redcoat/ cruise ships) film or TV work. Employment within the industry not only depends on talent, but also on a sense of determination to succeed. You will be given advice on self-employment and potential routes.
