Course Overview

This is a Marine course with a difference!    A unique experience to study Marine Vessel Maintenance in greater depth.

This course runs over 2 years, providing you with a wealth of skills such as Health and Safety, Hand fitting, Engine, and Plant Maintenance, Welding, using Lathes, and Forming and Assembling Pipework, to name a few (hence the need for 2 years).

 

This course has been designed with the assistance of the Marine Industry and provides you with all the skills needed to progress into either our L3 Diploma or an Apprenticeship in Marine, Automotive, Aviation, or Engineering.

 

In the first year we will be working on the following units:

  • Working Safely in an Engineering Environment
  • Producing Components Using Hand Fitting Techniques
  • Carrying Out Engineering Activities Efficiently and Effectively
  • Using and Communicating Technical Information
  • Preparing and Using Lathes for Turning Operations

In our second year you will study the following units:

  • General Fabrication and Welding Applications
  • Forming and Assembling Pipework System
  • Marine Vessel Plant Maintenance
  • Maintaining Electrical Equipment/Systems

 

 

This course has been designed to address the skills shortage in the Maritime industry. You might choose to build pleasure crafts, live and work on a super yacht in the Caribbean or work on an Oil tanker navigating the globe. Either way, this course will give you the start in that career. The skills and knowledge gained in our full-time programmes will provide you with all you need to move into a Marine apprenticeship, all successful applicants will get an interview with a selection of major Marine employers at the end of the two-year programme. Or you might be working towards a Cadetship and a career in the Royal or Merchant Navy. This course is endorsed by them all.

 

You will require a minimum of Grade 4 in mathematics and 3 GCSEs at Grade A*-D (9-3) including English.

Alternatively, successfully completing a relevant Level 1 qualification and achieving a Level 2 Functional Skill in maths and a Level 1 Functional Skill in English.

 

The qualification is assessed by completing a portfolio of evidence which details the work the learner has completed. This can be gathered through observation, professional discussion, witness testimony and exams on site. The lecturer will work alongside you to confirm that you have met the requirements of the qualification and that you are therefore competent in the task.

Work experience is a fundamental part of the study program and the college will assist you in finding meaningful work experience this should be a minimum of 30 hours per year to be completed outside of your college hours/days.

Upon completion of the Level 2 Maritime you have a number of options, firstly is to progress up into our Level 3 Diploma in Maritime Studies: Shipping and Maritime Operations (Engineering). You can take the skills learnt so far and start an apprenticeship in either a Marine, Automotive, Aviation or Engineering Industry as the skill set gained is so comprehensive it leads to all of these different options. If you stay with the Level 3 course you can keep studying with us and in and move into a degree-level apprenticeship or a Cadetship.

Apprenticeship in a Maritime role, (or Automotive, Aviation, Engineering).

After this, the world is your oyster at sea or on land. You would be on the path to being an Electrician or Engineer living and working at sea or be shoreside repairing or making pleasure crafts or heavy industry vessels.

If you are 19+ a fee applies of £2583 per year.

Must-have items: Safety boots and overalls, scientific calculator, and basic drawing equipment (pencil, ruler, protractor, compass), 


£131 materials fee is payable on enrolment per year.

You will need to provide suitable overalls/uniform and safety boots which must always be worn at all times in the workshops, you will need to bring pens and an A4 notebook to keep a record of your learning.

Students will be expected to complete an additional four hours minimum of self-study each week.

There is a £131 per year materials fee to be paid at enrolment.
