Course Overview

The apprenticeship is designed to develop a broad range of skills. This course aims to give practical, on the job training that will help prepare you for your career in the engineering field. You will develop Engineering skills and improve your confidence, effectiveness and efficiency in the business environment.

Apprenticeships are a popular choice for people looking for on-the-job training and the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning a wage. Most of your training will be directly linked to the career you have chosen, gaining practical experience in the workplace, backed up by attendance at college just one day a week.

An Apprenticeship in Engineering will develop your employability skills and give you valuable experience of a variety of engineering related activities. You will be working in a workshop environment where your duties could encompass many areas of the work. Your exact duties will depend upon your employer.
 

Sujects studied will include:

  • Health and safety
  • Communication skills
  • Working Efficiently and Effectively
  • Engineering Fabrication and Welding
  • Fitting using hand skills
  • Engineering Drawings
     

You will also study Functional Skills at the appropriate level.

Good GCSE's in English, Maths and Science are desireable, however all applicants are encouraged to apply and suitability will be determined at interview.

You must have good practical skills and work carefully and methodically.

Applicants should demonstrate an active interest in working in an engineering environment.

Apprenticeships are a great option for school leavers who want to get straight onto the career ladder.

You will be continually assessed throughout your training. Some of the assessment will take place in the workplace, plus you will take some external tests/examinations for functional skills (if required) and technical certificate. Your progress will be reviewed regularly and achievable targets set to ensure you complete your Apprenticeship on time.

On successful completion of an Apprenticeship in Engineering Operative (Level 2). You could progress in your chosen career onto an Apprenticeship in Engineering (Level 3).

Engineering Operatives are predominantly involved in engineering operations which are key to the success of the Manufacturing and Engineering sector allowing employers to grow their business while developing a work force with the relevant skills and knowledge to enhance the sustain the  sector.

The role covers a wide range of common and job specific skills sets that can be transferred across the manufacturing engineering industry sectors during the course of their careers. Dependent on the sector that they are employed in there may be subtle differences in terms of composition and application of the job role specific skills and knowledge they will require, however the core skills and knowledge will be the same regardless of the sector/area they work in.
