The Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Applied Sciences is designed to address an increasing need for high quality professional and technical education pathways, providing students with a stimulating and challenging programme of study that will be both engaging and memorable. This qualification will provide you with the essential subject knowledge needed to progress successfully into further study or into the world of work.
You will undertake a core of learning in Applied Science:
Fundamentals of Laboratory Techniques
Scientific data handling approaches and techniques
Regulation and Quality in the Applied Sciences
Managing Scientific Projects
As well as the opportunity to complete units to specialise in your desired Science related pathway - Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Forensic Science, or Food Science, Technology & Nutrition
Anyone over 18 yrs old who is looking for a change in career, and has a passion for science, or working in in the science/forensic science field
BTEC Applied in a Science related subject minimum MMP (equivalent to 64 UCAS points) or 2 A-levels (D or above) in a Science related subject – every application is considered on an individual basis.
Applicants should also have five GCSE grades 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent including Science, English and Maths.
We will also consider applicants who have passed a Kitemarked Access to Higher Education course (equivalent to 80 UCAS points).
If you do not have the standard entry requirements but have relevant work experience or an alternative qualification you may still be eligible for the course.
You may be required to attend for an interview or assessment.
You will be assessed using a wide range of assessment methods involving an appropriate balance between formative and summative methods. Formative assessment will give you feedback on your performance and progress which in turn should develop and consolidate knowledge, understanding, skills, competencies and confidence. Summative assessment includes the assignment grades contributing towards the overall unit grade and it should also give you additional formative feedback to support your ongoing development. Assessments may also include elements of lab work, practical assessments, portfolios of evidence, oral and written reports, `in class` tests, both open and closed book examinations, case studies and discussions, action plans and self-reflection activities, presentations etc. All written work related to assessments will be submitted via Turnitin to ensure authentication of your work.
The Pearson BTEC Higher National qualification in Applied Sciences is aimed at students wanting to continue their education through applied learning and who wish to pursue or advance their career in Applied Sciences or related fields.
The course provides opportunities for students to enter or progress in employment in the Applied Sciences, or progress to year 2 in higher education qualifications such as an Honours degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Forensic Science, Food Technology, Polymers or a related area.
After completing a Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate you can also progress directly into employment. A range of careers is available as Laboratory Technician, Research Technician, Technical Support Chemist / Biologist, Quality Support Technician, Manufacturing Technician, Science Technician, Technologist, Instrumentation Technician and Product Development Technician. The qualification is also designed for job roles in a range of supervisory or lower management roles in Applied Sciences.
£6,750 per annum
Students who are eligible, can apply for a student loan via Student finance login - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) to cover the cost of the tutiton fees.
.The majority of students will be able to access a Tuition Fee Loan from Student Finance England to pay their HE Course Fee.
Self-funding students may pay in 3 instalments in September (25%), January (25%) and April (50%).
International Fees
We currently do not offer this course to International applicants due to UKVI regulations.
