Course Overview

Apprenticeships are a popular choice for people looking for on-the-job training and the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning a wage. Most of your training will be directly linked to the career you have chosen, gaining practical experience in the workplace, backed up by attendance at college just one day a week.

An Apprenticeship in Hairdressing will develop your employability skills and give you valuable experience of a variety of routine hairdressing related activities. You will be working in a salon environment where your duties could encompass many areas of hairdressing such as communicating with colleagues and clients, dealing with customer enquiries, carrying out numerous practical hairdressing tasks etc. Your exact duties will depend upon your employer.

Where possible staff from College Apprenticeships Training will find you an employer and a place of work (although students who are already employed are welcome to apply if sponsored by their employer). Your offer of Apprenticeship training will be dependent upon work placements being available.

Apprenticeships are a great option for school leavers who want to get straight onto the career ladder. An Apprenticeship is equivalent to 5 GCSE's.

To gain the full Apprenticeship you will work towards the following qualifications:

  • NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing
  • Functional skills in English level 1&2*
  • Functional skills in Maths Level 1&2**

*If you have achieved English GCSE GRADE 9-4 you will be exempt from English functional skills

**If you have achieved Maths GCSE GRADE 9-4 you will be exempt from Maths functional skills

The NVQ qualification is work-related and will relate specifically to your job role.

You will be continually assessed throughout your training. The assessments will take place in the college and in the workplace, plus you will take some external tests/examinations for key skills (if required). Your progress will be reviewed regularly and achievable targets set to ensure you complete your Apprenticeship on time.

On successful completion of this Apprenticeship you could progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Hairdressing (NVQ 3).

As a College Apprentice you will have access to all college resources to help with your training. You will also have a personal training co-ordinator who will work with you and your employer to help you throughout your training period.
