Course Overview

Our English (as a Foreign Language) Plus Courses are designed to help you improve your overall English language level and develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. The course will help you improve your knowledge and understanding of English grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, for personal, professional or academic use.

You will study 15 hours of English as a Foreign Language Plus an extra 6 hours of a ‘Plus’ subject.

Students taking our English programme will be offered help and practice in how to study. 

This programme is aimed at:

  • those preparing to take English Language qualifications, e.g. IELTS
  • those aiming to reach the required level of English to continue studying at The College, or at a UK University
  • those looking to improve their ability to communicate in English
  • those looking at learning English vocabulary in a specific professional or academic area
  • those looking to experience a taster course in a particular subject before committing to it long term
  • those looking to enhance existing professional skills or learn new skills alongside studying English

Our courses include:

  • elementary through to advanced levels (subject to numbers)
  • English language tuition highly qualified and experienced native level teachers
  • membership of Student Union, who plan college wide societies and activities
  • free unlimited use of the internet and email during College opening hours
  • access to high quality learner facilities including study support, a library and sport centre.
  • a stunning seaside location in Bournemouth

English Language part of this course will cover reading, writing, speaking (including pronunciation) and listening. Classed are based on a course book, but teachers will often add materials from other sources depending on their student’s needs and interests. For example, they may bring in newspaper articles, use pronunciation websites or other online resources, or use news items from British television.

In addition to the content specific to every level, the course also includes:

  • study skills that will help you continue to learn outside the classroom
  • pronunciation skills, which will help you understand the sounds you are reading and allow you to say new words in the correct way
  • lessons about British culture
  • exam skills
  • work-related topics (for example, understanding job adverts) and skills (CV writing, presentation skills, interpersonal skills)
  • oral presentation skills which will help in future jobs and if you go on to study at university

In your lessons you will be asked to be active and participate in a variety of activities (e.g. grammar exercises, pair and group work, communication, self and peer correction, oral presentations and exam preparation). It is important that you ask questions when you do not understand an idea that is brought up in class. You will also be able to give feedback on your classes and tell us if you want additional topics or activities.

This course is for international students who would like to improve their English language level and experience a vocational subject.

For these courses you must be aged 16 years or older.

When you arrive at the college you will complete a short English language placement test, which will determine the level of class you will start your studies at. The level of English you finish your course at will depend on how long you are studying for, how hard you study and your own personal progression.

On completion of this course you could progress onto either, Intensive English or a suitable level 3 programme.

International students have a choice of internationally recognised General and Academic English examinations: the most popular with our students is IELTS.  If you wish to take an IELTS test, please go to http://www.ielts.org for fees and other important information concerning studying in the UK.

Whilst the college can help with registration the exams fees are not included within the course costs.
