Course Overview

The aim of this qualification is to provide learners with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of babies and young children from birth to 7 years of age, with applied knowledge of early years, 0 - 5.  The qualification content meets the Department for Education's (DfE) Level 3 'full and relevant' criteria for a Level 3 Early Years Practitioner.

Upon successful completion of this qualification learners can enter the workforce as a qualified Level 3 Early Years Practitioner.

This qualification enables learners to count towards the Level 3 ratio as a qualified Level 3 Early Years Practitioner across the Early Years Workforce.

Learners may be employed in a variety of roles such as:

  • Senior Nursery Practitioner/Manager (when experience has been gained)
  • Pre-school Deputy/Room Leader/Manager
  • Practitioner within foundation stage.

Candidates will be required to attend college on a weekly basis and are taught the theory behind a range of topics, such as Safeguarding, Play, Equality and Diversity etc.  We use an e-portfolio system called One File, which can be accessed on any suitable electronic device using your personal secure login.  Assignments are set to ensure you have the in-depth knowledge and understanding of the subjects taught, linking your own practical experience to knowledge throughout. You will also be assessed in the workplace and be required to submit a range of additional workplace evidence.

Apprentices must be employed for approximately 30 hours per week in an appropriate Early Years setting.  It is a requirement that a Level 2 Maths and English qualification is achieved prior to starting the Level 3 course to ensure the full apprenticeship is achieved and to meet sector requirements.

An apprentice must pass an end point assessment with an independent end point assessment organisation before they can be counted as a fully qualified Early Years practitioner.   The EPA process ensures the apprentice has the appropriate knowledge, skills and behaviours ( KSB’s ) to be an effective and highly trained early years practitioner.

A range of evidence will need to be provided including

  • L2 Maths and English certificates
  • Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) or Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF) or a first aid course as per the EYFS requirements.

On successful completion of the Level 3 Early Years Educator apprenticeship  there may be the opportunity to progress onto the Fda Early Years Services (University of Wolverhampton) Degree course and then onto the (BA Hons) Early Childhood Studies (Top-Up) at college - please see the college website for further details.
