Course Overview

The Diploma in Education and Training course delivered at the college is an ‘in-service’ qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers or trainers in the post compulsory sector (14 years plus). It may be possible for pre-service teachers/ trainers to also complete this qualification, provided they meet the entry requirements. Those not yet formally contracted to work as teachers/trainers may be able to undertake this qualification, provided they have access to 150 hours of teaching and a further 100 hours of other duties, to include assessment, meetings etc. 20 of these hours will need to include some sort of online delivery and a further 20 of the hours should in either another department or different teaching organisation over the duration of the award.

The whole qualification is delivered part time over 18 months and replaces the City & Guilds DET qualification.

Students who successfully complete this qualification will gain a further knowledge on aspects of planning, delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning. Whilst doing this, students will learn about theories and principles in education and training and demonstrate them in their practice. Student will also carry out research into professionalism in education and training and consider their impact on their role as a fully qualified teacher.

 

This course covers topics such as behaviour management, Equality and Diversity, curriculum development, theories and principles of learning plus more besides.

The Diploma in Teaching (FE & Skills) course delivered at the college is an ‘in-service’ qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers or trainers in the post compulsory sector (14 years plus) and be able to provide evidence of at least 250 hours of teaching practice experience over the duration of the course.

It is a requirement that anyone entering this course will have a minimum Level 3 qualification in their own area of specialism and a level 2 in English & Maths.

Access to 150 hours of teaching and a further 100 hours of other duties, to include assessment, meetings etc. Approximately, 20 of these hours will need to include some sort of online delivery and a further 20 of the hours should in either another department or different teaching organisation over the duration of the award.

Additionally, you will need two mentors, one specialist subject and one pastoral to support you through the programme.

Prior to enrolment, original certificates are required to be seen and verified along with a copy of the applicants most recent enhanced DBS certificate. Please note all international qualifications which are listed in the application to meet the entry requirements will need to be accompanied by a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability.

The qualification will be assessed through a combination of presentations, written essays, a portfolio of teaching evidence and observations of teaching.

On successful completion students can apply for QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills Status) which is equivalent to QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) in a school setting.

Progression to a full a BA (Hons) in Education through a number of universities is possible on successful completion of the course.

This course qualifies students to work in a variety of teaching environments including, further education colleges, military training institutions, secondary schools, private training providers and the voluntary/public sectors.

Previous successful candidates are now working as lecturers and managers in the Further Education and Secondary School Sectors, as well as going on to further study, completing BA (Hons) and Masters in Education.

Fees: £2095* per academic year.

Please note that this course delivered at the college is not eligible for a Higher Education student loan.
