Course Overview

The Degree Apprenticeship in Mechanical Design offers an innovative way of training the next generation of skilled industry workers. Apprentices work as part of a team and gain in-depth knowledge and skills in mechanical engineering design. Apprentices are critical thinkers and independent learners, able to solve complex design and engineering related problems individually and in teams. Validated by Bournemouth University, accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) and delivered by Bournemouth & Poole College, the Apprenticeship has high industrial relevance and close ties with the requirements of local industry. Apprentices will work on ‘live’ projects and assignments related to and based on real experiences within their organisation.

On this six year course, apprentices will pass through four major stages. The first two years will be spent studying for a Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) qualification, before completing a Level 5 Foundation Degree (FdEng) in the third year. To complete the full Degree (BEng), the apprentice will complete two further years of study. Upon completion, not only will they have a range of skills tailored to business needs, but they will also have six years of vital industry experience. The final year also involves preparation for the end point assessment.

These courses have been specifically designed, in consultation with Industry and Professional Institutions, to enable those predominately working in engineering to study alongside their work. Our HNCs and Foundation Degrees in engineering are ideally suited to those who are looking to gain the essential skills to advance their career in a variety of engineering roles.

This course can also be studied as a stand-alone qualification. Please click here for more information.

There are various entry points to the degree apprenticeship.

To begin at Level 4/HNC, candidates will typically have 32 UCAS points, one A Level at grade C in a relevant subject or equivalent AVCE or national diploma/certificate.

To begin at Level 5/FdEng, candidates will typically have 120 Level 4 credits from an HNC in an appropriate discipline with a minimum grade of Merit.

To enrol as an apprentice you must be in employment and your employer agree to the process of signing up to and completing the necessary tasks within the Apprenticeship Service. We will be able to support your employer through this process as required.

Completing this degree apprenticeship will give you the knowledge and experience to study a Master’s degree in a relevant subject.

There is a national shortage of skilled engineering professionals. During the degree apprenticeship, you will become competent in a range of skills, opening up a wide range of career opportunities in the future.

Covid-19 Update - September 2020

During the first semester of this course you will be taught on campus for lab, practical and workshop sessions, backed up with relevant seminars and online resources. It is hoped that small group lectures and tutorials will also be delivered on-campus depending on government guidance.

We hope to have a full programme of face-to-face sessions on campus for all courses from January if government guidelines permit.

You will be able to use the Library, the Student Centre, Open Access Centre and social learning spaces, subject to physical distancing measures to undertake group and other work.

There will be no other changes to the content of your course as a result of Covid-19; we will deliver all of the units we have previously promised we would, and we are not making any changes to the individual learning outcomes on your course.

It’s important that you know these changes are temporary and that we will be back to our usual on-campus experience as soon as national guidance makes it possible.

See our Coronavirus FAQs for the latest information from BU.

This is the latest information, updatedon 20July. We will update this page when more information is available, and we can confirm any additional on-campus activity.
