About the BTEC Extended Diploma in IT

Our Pearson Edexcel BTEC Extended Diploma in IT is a two-year programme equivalent to three A-Levels. It has been designed in collaboration with universities, employers, and industry experts to ensure you gain the right mix of skills and knowledge for further study or employment.

What you’ll study: 

  • 13 specialist IT units covering key technical and practical skills 
  • Hands-on projects and real-world problem-solving
  • Industry-relevant learning designed to make you employment-ready
  • The opportunity to progress to university, apprenticeships, or full-time employment

This course will give you the confidence and expertise to succeed in today’s digital world—whether you want to start your career straight away or continue your education.

The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with academics to ensure that it incorporates the most up-to-date knowledge and skills to enable progression to higher education. In addition, employers and professional bodies have been consulted on content development to confirm its relevance to current industry practice used in IT and related occupational disciplines.

Students study the relationship between hardware and software, managing and communicating information and data, and the principles of designing and developing computer programs across four mandatory units:

Information Technology Systems (external exam)
Creating Systems to Manage Information (external exam)
Using Social Media in Business
Programming
Cyber Security and Incident Management (external exam)
IT Service Delivery (external exam)
IT Project Management

You will require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades grades 9-4 (formerly A*-C) including English and maths. Alternatively, successful completion of a relevant Level 2 qualification at a Merit or above and have achieved a Level 2 Functional Skill in English and maths.

Your understanding will be assessed through practical assessments in the form of internally assessed assignments and externally assessed tasks and written exams.

BTEC assignments are broken down into tasks, so it’s clear what is expected, and how the skills would be used in an actual workplace.

When?

  • Exam timetables vary, but usually, you will sit exams and set tasks in January and May/June.
  • Your lecturer may set assignments for you at any time in the year.

All students will be expected to take part in relevant work experience during their study programme with us. You will also be involved in a work experience project which will hone your project planning, financial management, team player and programming skills.

The BTEC Extended Diploma in IT is a widely recognised qualification that carries UCAS points, enabling progression to higher education, apprenticeships, and employment in the IT and technology sector.
