Course Overview

This is a demanding study programme, designed for students with a genuine interest in gaining a career within the travel and tourism industry.  The programme is well recognised by employers and also provides a route to Higher Education. This is a full time, two year study programme that incorporates the National Foundation Diploma (which is a one year option equivalent to 1.5 A Levels).

This qualification is equivalent to 3 'A'levels and is widely recognised by Industry and Universities,attracting UCAS points and taught within an award winning department.

 

This study programme is designed to develop your understanding of the tourism industry together with gaining practical skills and knowledge required to prepare you for a career in the tourism industry or for further study at the university. You will study 13 units in total, with 2 units being externally assessed.

The following units are studied in the first year on this course:

  • The World of Travel & Tourism -  external assessment
  • Global Destinations -  external assessment
  • Managing the Customer Experience in Travel and Tourism 
  • Travel and Tourism Enterprises 
  • The Airport Experience 
  • Working Overseas

The following units are covered in the second year on this course:

  • Researching Current Travel Trends and Key Issues in Travel and Tourism 
  • Managing Accommodation Services 
  • The UK as a Tourist Destination 
  • The Cruise Industry 
  • Recruitment and Selection in Travel and Tourism
  • Sustainable Tourism
  • Events,Conferences and Exhibitions

School Leaver 16 year old +

You will require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 9-5 including English and maths grades 9-5 (formerly A*-C). Alternatively successful completion of a relevant Level 2 qualification and have achieved a Level 2 Functional Skill in English and maths.

This course is assesed through both external and internal assessments. A wide range of assessment types and styles to reflect the travel and tourism industry,are designed for the internal assessments which can include  reports, role-plays, presentations and written assignments. Assessment will also be carried out during educational study visits, which may include for example overseas visits, local tourism and airport visits.

All units are graded Pass,Merit or Distinction, with an overall grade on a scale from PPP to D*D*D*

A minmum of 30 hours work experience is included in the study programme.

 Further your studies at the College with our Diploma in Air Cabin Crew & Ground Operations course. Alternatively progress your studies onto Higher Education within the Leisure,Travel and Tourism sector.

Employment within the dynamic travel and tourism industry is vast and includes working for a travel agency, tour operator, tourist information centre, cruise line, airport or airlines, hotels, or in a wide variety of other Tourism fields.

 

The fee for 16 - 19 yr olds for this course is £140.00 for educational visits and an atlas

There is a very high level of support for this study programme. Every student will have regular frequent contact with an academic tutor and a personal development tutor who will support and guide you through your study programme, ensuring your success. This study programme provides a number of opportunities to experience the dynamic travel and tourism industry at first hand through educational visits, visiting speakers, and the practical experience of our team of lecturers, all of whom have had many years working in various aspects of the Tourism industry.
