Automotive Apprenticeship Level 3

To gain the full Apprenticeship you will work towards the following qualifications:

MOTOR VEHICLE SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN - LIGHT VEHICLE APPRENTICESHIP STANDARD

Motor vehicle service and maintenance technicians have the following knowledge and understanding:

• How vehicle service and repair is impacted by legislative, regulatory and ethical requirements, including health and safety law and environmental procedures;
• The structure of the industry and how the business works from an operational perspective, business targets, the systems and processes that make up the efficient running of a business;
• How to develop positive working relationships and communicate effectively and how to carry out self-evaluation and improve own performance;
• The procedures for the maintenance of tools and the workshop;
• Routine servicing and inspection procedures;
• Steering and suspension geometries; electrical circuit requirements and calculations;
• Construction and operation of vehicle components and systems;
• Common fault types, causes and effects of different types of faults;
• The implications and legal requirements of fitting accessories and carrying out vehicle modifications;
• How to diagnose faults using suitable fault finding strategies;
• Construction and operation of advanced electrical, braking and suspension systems, engine and transmission systems and engine and gear calculations;
• Vehicle emissions and legal requirements;
• Alternative fuels and hybrid and electric systems

Entrants should possess GCSE's in English, Maths and a Science-based subject at grades A to C. It is strongly recommended that entrants have completed an Apprenticeship in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair at level 2 prior to commencing a Level 3 Apprenticeship. All applicants for Apprenticeship training will be required to attend an assessment and interview.

You will be continually assessed throughout your training. Most of the assessment will take place in the workplace, plus you will take some external tests/examinations for Functional skills (if required). Your progress will be reviewed regularly and achievable targets set to ensure you complete your Apprenticeship on time.

As a College Apprentice, you will have access to all college resources to help with your training. You will also have a personal training coordinator who will work with you and your employer to help you throughout your training period.

Expect to earn at least £80.00 per week. You may also get help with travel costs but this will depend on your employment status and the terms and conditions of your Apprenticeship. This will be explained to you prior to commencing with an employer.

While your technical skills and knowledge will develop over the course of your Apprenticeship you will also need to demonstrate to potential employers that you possess relevant skills and personal qualities and are willing to work and to learn.
