Course Overview

The Assistant Practioner (Health) Apprenticeship is delivered collaboratively between Bournemouth and Poole College and Health Sciences University (formerly AECC University College).

Assistant Practitioners work as part of the wider health and social care team and have direct contact with patients, service users or clients providing high quality and compassionate care. This job role will be to assist  the Registered Healthcare Professional with a wide variety of  interventions. It offers the opportunity to develop individuals within more diverse settings to a Band 4 Role​.

The Foundation Degree is aimed at people working in these support roles to the Allied Health Professions (AHPs) across the health and social care sector and is in large demand from the NHS. Significant investment has been made by the NHS to the development of the Allied Health Profession support workforce.

Applicants to this course must be working within a relevant allied health professions support worker role. Apprentices must also have evidence of Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths or GCSE at Grade C/4 or above or equivalent prior to the end-point assessment.

The apprenticeship is part-time delivery, consisting of 6 hours per week of off-the-job hours. These hours make up protected learning time designed and planned for a typical apprentice to achieve the level of competence required to successfully achieve their apprenticeship.

The delivery for this will be blended and include a mixture of face-to-face delivery as well as tutor-guided learning via asynchronous online material via the virtual learning environment.

In addition, tri-partite reviews will be held four times a year between the apprentice, workplace supervisor and university apprenticeship tutor. This meeting is a formal, mandatory review of the apprentice’s progress towards meeting the KSBs in their apprenticeship and preparation for the End-point Assessment and provides an opportunity for academic support

This programme is delivered over 2 years which equates to 240 credits

7 Core Units 20 credits per unit  ​= 140 credits  ​

3 Specialised Units 20 credits per unit ​= 60 credits

End Point Assessment (EPA) Year 2 = 40 credits ​

In total 240 credits ​

There are 6 Units per year. 

Year 1 Level 4 units:

Year 2 Level 5 units:

·         End point assessment= 2 units

The optional unit pathways consist of three units (one Level 4, two Level 5) aligned to key clinical areas:

•        Diagnostic radiography – AHP4010 Foundations of Physics and Radiation, AHP5015 Principles of Diagnostic Equipment and Positioning, AHP5016 Applied Diagnostic and Interventional Radiography

•        Therapeutic radiography - AHP4010 Foundations of Physics and Radiation, AHP5017 Principles of Radiotherapy and Oncology, AHP5018 Applied Radiotherapy

•        Rehabilitation (physiotherapy/occupational therapy) – AHP4011 Foundations of Condition Management, AHP5010 Principles of Rehabilitation, AHP5011 Applied Rehabilitation

•        Speech and language therapy – AHP4012 Foundations of Speech and Language Therapy, AHP5012Principles of Speech and Language Therapy, AHP5014 Applied Health Promotion and Facilitating Learning.

•        Dietetics – AHP4013 Foundations of Nutritional Assessment, AHP5013 Principles of Nutritional Support, AHP5014 Applied Health Promotion and Facilitating Learning

Please note the optional units in Year 2 have pre-requisites attached in respect of units studied in the first year.

The course will run over two years.  In each year there will be 80 credits of generic content across all of the professions and 40 credits of profession specific content, which will enable to tailoring based upon the Knowledge skills and attributes associated with that profession. There are a number of pathways in the following Allied Health Professions:

Diagnostic Radiography; Therapeutic Radiography; Physiotherapy; Occupational Therapy; Podiatry/Orthotics/Prosthetics; Speech and Language Therapy; Dietetics; Operating Department Practitioners; Orthoptics.

The course is mapped to the Level 5 Assistant Practitioner apprenticeship and the HEE AHP Support Worker Competency, Education and Career Development Framework document.

Professional & Academic Requirements:

Students should be employed in a setting where they can be supervised by a Registered AHP or other registered healthcare professionals.

Evidence of English and Maths at Level 2 Grade C/4 or above or equivalent.

Evidence of a suitable Level 3 qualification (BTEC National Diploma, QCF Extended Diploma, T Level, Equivalent qualifications may be considered, including workplace delivered NVQs).

Experience within the speciality.

Students will need to demonstrate the ability to study a programme at academic Level 5.

Occupational Health and DBS checks will be undertaken by the employer.

Completion of the Care Certificate.

Please note the college will require evidence of your qualifications when making an application. All international qualifications which are listed in the application to meet the entry criteria will need to be accompanied by a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability.

The course has been designed to develop skills in critical thinking, self-directed learning, reflective practice, evidence-based practice, person-centred practice, and multi-disciplinary working.

Apprentices will have the opportunity to develop good academic practice and academic integrity. This is seen alongside the practical assessment and coursework, enabling them to develop an engaging academic writing style in different formats, including but not limited to: reflective reports, case-based reports, portfolios, presentations, examinations and project reports. The units have been developed to allow learners to collate evidence throughout the apprenticeship which will form part of the portfolio, which is a gateway criteria for the end-point assessment.

This course acts as the foundation for further study through apprenticeships (or traditional routes) as an Allied Health Professional.

On successful completion, graduates are eligible to apply for roles as an Assistant Practitioner (NHS Band 4). You could work in hospitals, clinics or in the community such as in GP surgeries, or visiting patients in their home.

Funding Band 10 - £14,000

Assistant Practitioners work alongside registered health professionals using their skills and experience in a particular area of clinical practice.

They work in almost any area of the NHS, and have direct contact with patients, service users or clients providing high quality, focused and compassionate care. As part of the programme, you can choose specialist pathways aligned to roles across the health and care sector. The programmes offers an inter-professional learning experience, meaning you will learn from and across different professional roles giving you a holistic view of the patient experience.

This programme is aiming to deliver two start dates: September 2024 and  March 2025
