Course Overview

This course is designed to be both informative and enjoyable. You will learn a range of art and design skills to include Drawing, Painting and 2D Process. You will also learn about the work of practicing artists. The course is aimed at students who have a real enthusiasm for Art and Design and who wish to improve their portfolio of artwork to progress onto a Level 3 course.

This is a broad-based, practical course that provides the opportunity for students to develop and expand their skills and understanding within the following areas of study:

Graphic Design
Digital Design
Drawing/Illustration
Surface Design
2D/3D Design

Throughout the course, you will study Functional Skills in English and Maths. You will have opportunities to visit an art and design exhibition, museum or gallery related to various aspects of projects within the course. You will also have regular weekly tutorials. You will be continuously assessed through your course work which includes practical, written and timed assignments. You may possibly get the opportunities to work on realistic workplace situations, activities and live briefs. Throughout the course, you will be creating a portfolio of work which will culminate in an end of year portfolio presentation.

You will require a minimum of 4 GCSEs including English and maths Grades 9-3 (formerly Grades A*-D) and Science for some programmes. Alternatively, successful completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification and have achieved a Level 1 Functional Skill in English and Maths.

We would also require a portfolio of current artwork. This could be examples of drawings, paintings, sculpture, photography, textiles, design etc...

Bournemouth and Poole College is an approved Centre for UAL Awarding Body, UAL Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design

All students will be encouraged to complete five days of work experience while on the course. 

Course Progression:
Upon successful completion of the course, you could progress onto the BTEC L3 Subsidiary Diploma in Art & Design which covers a range of specialist career paths all of which cover a further two years of study or to employment / further training in an art and design field. If over 18 and completing the BTEC L2 Diploma with Functional skills you could apply to the BTEC L3 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design which is a one year course.

The course is taught in the brand new million pound North Light Centre for Art and Design.

This new building has industry-standard Apple Mac suites, drawing and painting studios, specialist fashion and textiles studios and a photography studio. You will also have access to the Learning Resource Centre at North Road, which holds an extensive selection of art, design and photography books and IT facilities. There is also a Study Advice Centre for additional support with your course as well as an active Student Union programme offering a number of social events.

These facilities will support you in your future career progression in either worked-based training, progression to a higher course or employment.

You will have access to Bournemouth and Poole College's virtual learning environment, Moodle, which can be accessed from any computer with internet access (at home, libraries or Bournemouth and Pooole College) to submit assignments, coursework and download course materials and handouts etc.
