Course Overview

Apprenticeships are a popular choice for people looking to become fully qualified in their chosen field whilst earning a wage. Your training will be directly linked to the career you have chosen, gaining practical experience in the workplace, backed up by attendance at college on one day per week.

An Apprenticeship Standard in Engineering will develop your employability skills and give you valuable experience of a variety of engineering related activities. You will be working in a workshop environment where your duties will encompass advanced welding techniques. Your exact duties will depend upon your employer.

Where possible staff from College will give advise to you to find a suitable employer and a place of work (although students who are already employed are welcome to apply if sponsored by their employer). Your offer of an  Apprenticeship will be dependent upon suitable work placements being available.

To gain the Advanced Apprenticeship you will work towards the following qualifications:

Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)

Work based portfolio of evidence

Functional Skills: Maths Level 2
                           English Level 2

Good GCSE's in English, Maths and Science are desireable, however all applicants are encouraged to apply and suitability will be determined at interview.

You must have good practical skills and work carefully and methodically.

Applicants should demonstrate an active interest in working in an engineering environment.

You will be continually assessed throughout your training. Some of the assessment will take place in the workplace, plus you will take some external tests/examinations for functional skills (if required) and technical certificate. Your progress will be reviewed regularly and achievable targets set to ensure you complete your Apprenticeship on time.

On successful completion of this Apprenticeship in Engineering (Level 3), you could progress in your chosen career into Higher Education on a HNC/HND or Foundation or First Class Degree.

Progression onto Higher Apprenticeship Framework Level 4 is also an option.

As a College Apprentice you will have access to all college resources to help with your training. You will also have a personal training co-ordinator who will work with you and your employer to help you throughout your training period.

Expect to earn at least the national minimum wage for apprentices. You may also get help with travel costs but this will depend on your employment status and the terms and conditions of your Apprenticeship. This will be explained to you prior to commencing with an employer.

Here at The College we have a reputation for offering excellent skills training. Our lecturers are professionals in their chosen fields, with sound experience, knowledge and expertise.
