Are you interested in pursuing a career as a science technician or gaining a degree in Science?  If so, this course is suitable for you. The course is designed for those who have a lively and enquiring mind and have an enthusiasm for new ideas and concepts.


As you progress on the course you will find that your knowledge and understanding of Science is enhanced and that you gain confidence in your own abilities through the practical aspects of the course. If you are considering future employment in a related field or progression to higher education then you will find that how you communicate and work within a team are extremely important skills to acquire. There is also a keen emphasis placed on how you work independently.
 

The aim of the course is to gain a broad understanding in Biomedical Science enabling progression to a variety of HE qualifications or direct employment into related medical fields e.g. paramedics, hospital laboratories and operating theatres, radiography and nursing.
 

The Full Diploma will include 7 core units plus 7 specialist units:
 

Core Units:

  • Principles and Applications of Science I and II
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Scientific Investigation Skills
  • Laboratory Techniques and their Application
  • Contemporary Issues in Science
  • Investigative Projects

Specialist Units from:

  • Physiology of Human Body Systems
  • Human Regulation and Reproduction
  • Biomedical Science
  • Microbiology and Microbiological Techniques
  • Genetics and Genetic Engineering
  • Disease and Infection

You will require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C including English, maths and double Science grades 9-4 (formerly A*-C). Alternatively successful completion of a relevant Level 2 qualification and have achieved a Level 2 Functional Skill in English and maths.

You will be taught by a combination of formal lectures, work shops, practical exercises and independent research study.

All work will be assessed through a programme of assignments, set and marked by your tutors and checked by a moderator.

Science based subjects are taught in classrooms which are also used for group discussions and purpose built laboratories. You will have extensive use of The College's Learning Resource Centres which have an extensive selection of books on Science and student access to the Internet. You will also have access to the Moodle (College course resources).

You will complete 30 hours of work experience per year during this course.

This will build your skillset and give evidence that you can apply your knowledge in a workplace setting. This will make you standout to employers.

On successful completion of this course you are able to progress on to higher education for a Degree or HND in Medical Science, or to employment in a wide range of Medical Science based careers.

After completing Biomedical Science at The College, you will be highly specialised to pursue roles such as:

  • Medical Laboratory Assistant
  • Decontamination Sciences Technician
  • Forensic Laboratory Technician

Because you will posses a wide range of skills, roles outside of biodmedical science are also avaliable to you like: 

  • Clinicial Audit Assistant
  • Crime Scene Investigator
  • Science Teaching Technician
  • Animal Technician
  • Pharmacy retail worker

Tuition fees are not payable on full time courses for 16-18 year olds.

For individuals aged 19 + please ask for details as you may be eligible for the L3 entitlement.
