Breaking down Barriers to Opportunity: A look at the Foundation Department During Colleges Week.
As part of Colleges Week, the theme of ‘Breaking down barriers to Opportunity’ was exemplified during a recent learning walk in the Foundation Department. Board members Sue Wellman and Sharon Jones, guided by staff Members Louise Garner, Director of Learning and Paula Lock, Learning Manager, where they explored how the department fosters an inclusive, and engaging environment for students.
The Foundation Department offers a range of pathways, including:
- A2FE (Access to Further Education) Programme
- Steps
- Progression
The department also runs a summer transition Programme designed for NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) students, helping them reconnect with education or training opportunities.
A key part of the students’ experience is their involvement in practical, hands-on learning. One example is their work in the Snax Café, where students take turns managing various tasks such as cooking, serving, operating tills. These roles help them develop essential and transferable skills that will serve them well in their next steps. One student shared how designing the café’s menu board sparked an interest in art, and now applying to study art with us after her course is finished.
In addition to their work in the café, students benefit from a broad curriculum that includes lessons, field trips, and the development of essential life skills. The department boasts a range of facilities, including a sensory room, an industry style kitchen, and newly refurbished classrooms.
The Foundation Department has undergone significant changes in recent years, with the team embracing modern innovations. For example, the café now features a professional menu and accepts card payments, alongside a new till system. These updates not only enhance the student experience but also provide them with practical skills they will carry into their future careers.
By offering practical experiences, the department empowers students to reach their full potential and look confidently toward their futures.
